Sydney Lamb is an emeritus professor of linguistics and cognitive sciences at Rice University. Before joining Rice, where he held an endowed chair, he was a professor at Yale University. Earlier he taught at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his PhD in Linguistics. He is well-known as the originator of the relational network theory of language, also called neuro-cognitive linguistics.
According to Wikipedia, “Lamb is best known as the father of the relational network theory of language, which is also known as ‘stratificational theory’. Near the turn of the millennium, he began developing the theory further and exploring its possible relationships to neurological structures and to thinking processes.” He has devoted many years to investigating language, mind, thought, perception, computer software and hardware, neuro-logical structure (which is quite unlike anything found in computers), and philosophy. His books include Pathways of the Brain (1999) and Language and Illusion (2004). He has taught ALL courses on Language, Mind and Body, and Mind and Music.
