Writing With a Purpose

Students will read short essays and analyze how authors write with purpose. They will deconstruct textual habits, sentence structure and organization in different genres with specific emphasis on cause-and-effect writing, process, analysis, deductive reasoning, etc. The text for this course is the ninth edition of Prose Models by Gerald Levin, Harcourt Brace. The coordinator will provide copies and handouts of relevant passages.

Judy has studied professional writing using the works of Donald Graves, an educator in the field of writing education. She has been involved with the Buzzards Bay Writing Project at UMass, Dartmouth and has experience in writing and editing.
